Sticking doors and windows: humidity or movement?
One door that sticks in humid weather and frees up in winter is wood swelling. Several doors and windows on the same side of the house that stick, a door that swings open or closed on its own, latches that no longer line up, or a diagonal crack from a door's top corner: those are a frame being racked by foundation movement, and they usually arrive together.
When it is serious
- Multiple openings on one side of the house affected
- A door that swings on its own (the frame is out of plumb)
- Latch misalignment that changes with the season
- Diagonal drywall cracks from the corners of openings
When it is usually cosmetic
- One exterior door that sticks in humid months only
- Windows painted shut or with worn hardware

Why do doors stick in summer?
Wood absorbs humidity and swells. On expansive clay, late summer is also when the soil shrinks and the slab edges drop, so the two overlap; the pattern across the house tells them apart.
