What it is and what drives the price
Foundation waterproofing ranges from sealing cracks and coating the wall to an interior drain tile and sump system or excavating and membraning the exterior. The price climbs in that order.
Water in a basement is almost always a drainage problem first: gutters, downspout extensions and grading fix a large share of cases for a few hundred dollars. Price those before a system.
What the soil under your address does to this decision
Slowly drained soils (hydrologic group C and D) and a seasonally high water table keep pushing water at the wall no matter what the gutters do; on those, an interior drain and sump is the durable fix. On well-drained soil, look above ground first.
What is the cheapest way to waterproof a basement?
Outside, above ground. Clean gutters, downspout extensions that discharge well away from the wall, and grading that slopes away from the house are the cheapest interventions and are where a large share of basement water comes from. Do those, watch the basement through a wet season, and only then price a system.
Water where the wall meets the floor
Water at the cove joint, the seam where the wall meets the slab, is hydrostatic pressure under and beside the slab pushing water through the weakest point. Sealants do not hold against it. The durable fix is an interior French drain: a trench along the inside of the footing with perforated pipe running to a sump pump, which relieves the pressure instead of fighting it. That is the drainage-system line in the table below. Exterior excavation and membrane is the top of the waterproofing range and is reserved for walls that leak along their length.
Is it worth waterproofing a basement?
If water is coming in, yes, in the order above: cheapest cause first, then a drain and sump where the soil keeps pushing. Damp walls with no standing water usually want a dehumidifier and better grading, not a system. A bowing wall is a different problem (wall stabilization), and no waterproofing bid should be signed until an engineer has measured it.
